Many people like margarine better than butter especially if they want to have what-so-called healthy diet. The question is: is margarine inded a good input for our body? Below are some facts of margarine that you may have not known yet.
In the past, when it was the first time margarine introduced to the marketplace, it contains trans fats. The trans fats were created through hydrogenation, the very process used to solidify liquid vegetable oil into a spread. Therefore, this first generation margarine is called hydrogenated margarine. The bad effect of the use of trans fats is they increase LDL cholesterol, popularly known as the ‘bad’ cholesterol. Trans fats also lower the HDL cholesterol, the ‘good’ cholesterol.
Well, Recently, improvement was made to the making of margarine. Nowadays, non-hydrogenated margarine is produced. Instead of hydrogenating liquid vegetable oil, manufacturers now add a tiny amount of modified palm and palm kernel oil to enhance the spreadability of margarine, creating a soft margarine that’s trans fatty acid free.
Non-hydrogenated margarine is better than the previous margarine, hydrogenated margarine, because it doesn’t contain any trans fat. No trans fats means good for our body because no bad cholesterol intake. So, margarine is indeed good enough for our body.
